COELACANTH
Relatives
of this 3 foot long marine fish first appeared in the Devonian
Period, some 400 million years ago, and were thought to have
become extinct at the end of the Cretaceous, 65 million years
ago. However, a living specimen was caught off the Comoro Islands
of the Indian Ocean in the 1930's, and several more have been caught
and studied since then. Nicknamed "Old Four Legs" because of it's
unusually robust paired fins, the Coelacanth and it's relatives
are considered to represent an intermediate step in the evolution
from fish to amphibians.
