DIPLOCAULUS

Fossils of this boomerang-headed amphibian have been found in Early Permian deposits in Texas, dating to 275 million years ago. It grew to a length of about two feet, with a flattened body, short limbs and a long, laterally compressed tail, it's primary swimming organ.

Theories on the reason for it's unusual head range from defense, insofar as predators would have extreme difficulty in swallowing this animal,or the flattened, bony projections on the head would act like a submarines rudder and diving planes, allowing it to dive or surface quickly, to avoid predators or catch prey.
