SMILODON
Fossils
of this animal, popularly known as the Saber-tooth cat, have
been found in North and South America. They became extinct
towards the end of the last glaciation period, about 10,000
years ago. Enormous numbers of their fossil bones have been
discovered in Rancho La Brea in Los Angeles, making them among
the best known fossil mammalian carnivores.
Combined with very powerful neck muscles, the long, laterally
compressed canine teeth are thought to have been used like daggers
to inflict deep wounds. These cats may also have employed group
hunting methods, enabling them to bring down large animals, like
young mastodons or mammoths.
