TRILOBITE

These ancient marine relatives of crabs, scorpions and spiders first appeared in the Cambrian Period, roughly 550 million years ago. Ranging in size from one inch long to more than eighteen, they evolved into many varied species.

As a defense against predators, some were able to roll into a ball, much like an armadillo or pill-bug. All trilobite species went extinct at the end of the Permian Period, about 300 million years ago.
